Jake Peavy Likely Headed Out of San Diego This Week

One thing is for sure right now. Jake Peavy will not be suiting up to play for the San Diego Padres this year. According to MLB.com, Peavy is headed to either the Braves or the Cubs later this week. This deal would provide some much needed pitching for the Braves, but wouldn’t really fill a hole for the Cubs, it would just make them more dominant. The Cubs already have Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden in their rotation. They have also offered 17 game winner Ryan Dempster a 3 year contract to re-sign with the Cubs. With the addition of Dempster, I would not see why the Cubs would go after Peavy too. I assume that this deal isn’t finalized until the Cubs know if they will be able to re-sign Ryan Dempster. If they do re-sign him, I think that the Cubs would withdraw from the Peavy sweepstakes, landing Peavy in Atlanta. Peavy would bring a great arm to a Braves team with an average ERA of 4.46 ranking them 12th in the NL. The interesting part of the Peavy story is that the Braves failed to negotiate for Peavy initially. At this year’s winter meetings, Braves GM Frank Wren was unable to work out a deal to bring Peavy to Atlanta, but determined he now finds himself right in the hunt to get Peavy. So to sum this all up, if Ryan Dempster re-signs with the Cubs, look for Atlanta to pick up Peavy. If Dempster stays a free agent, look for the Cubs to acquire Peavy.
